This page tries to explain some of the basic
terms used in relation to the search engines. Hopfully it will help you to
better understand these creatures. Note that abr stands for abbreviation. - Search Engine - (abr: SE) - An SE is used to search the Internet. Typical
SE's are Google, Yahoo and MSN. However there are easily hundreds more, though most
of those are private.
- Search Engine Result Pages - (abr: SERP's) - When a search is performed in
one of the SE's, a list of results is displayed. These are the result pages of the
search engines. The positions start at position 1 and that is the top position.
Traffic to a site will increase as the position gets closer to the top. If a site does
not list in the top twenty searches, it is doubtful that it will get much traffic
from the SERP's since few people look at that many results.
- Search Engine Optimization - (abr: SEO) - This is one of the most popular
topics lately. And for good reason. Without it, your site will most likely not place
well in the SERP's. SEO is a process for setting up your pages so that the SE's rate
them better. There are many, many steps to properly setting up a page for SEO purposes.
